Pascha of the Mother of God at the Diocesan Cathedral

There are four extended fasting periods of the Church Year. Each of these is give to us by the Holy Church to help us especially prepare for a great feast: Nativity (Nativity Fast), Pascha (Great Lent), Sts. Peter & Paul (Apostles’ Fast), and the Dormition of the Theotokos (Dormition Fast). Although the Dormition Fast is the shortest of these fasting periods, it is stricter in character (similar to Great Lent) and thus our expectation of the feast that ends the fast is great – just as it is for the Resurrection of the Lord. And in fact the Dormition of the Mother of God is sometimes known popularly as the Pascha of the Theotokos.

This great feast, the last of the Church Year, was marked at the Diocesan Cathedral of the Protection of the Mother of God in Des Plaines, IL with Divine Services led by His Eminence Archbishop Peter of Chicago & Mid-America. His Eminence led the Vigil with the special procession of the icon of the Theotokos in the tomb (similar to the icon of the Lord in the tomb that is utilized during the last days of Holy Week each year) on the eve of the feast, and the Divine Liturgy on the day of the feast. Those serving with Vladyka were:

Archpriest Gregory Joyce, Dean of Michigan ROCOR Parishes

Archpriest Tarasiy Maximtsev, Cleric of the Diocesan Cathedral Archpriest Valery Vovkovskii, Cleric of the Diocesan Cathedral

Priest Leonty Naidzions, Cleric of the Diocesan Cathedral Priest Daniel Franzen, Cleric of the Diocesan Cathedral

Protodeacon Alexander Kichakov, Cleric of the Diocesan Cathedral Deacon

Nikolai Lochmatow, Cleric of the Diocesan Cathedral

Deacon Micah Chisholm, Cleric of the St. Sebastian Mission in Traverse City, MI

Archpriest Andre Papkov, continuing his recovery from a stroke in September of 2019, participated in parts of the Vigil and partook of Holy Communion in the altar.

Following the great entrance His Eminence ordained Deacon Micah Chisholm a priest for service at the St. Sebastian Mission in Traverse City, MI.

Owing to the ongoing pandemic there was no gathering after the Divine Liturgy. In the evening the newly-ordained priest served Vespers and Matins in preparation for his first Divine Liturgy to be served the next day.
