Abraham Westervelt, a 17-year-old parishioner of St Basil the Great Church in St Louis, Missouri, has been working on his movie endeavors for some time, all the while gaining experience and honing his skills. The life of his parish steered his creativity in a new direction.
St Basil the Great Church has been blessed by the ongoing work of Roman Martynenko and Ivan Storchak, very talented iconographers from the Kuban area of Russia. They began their work at St Basil’s during the Great Lent of 2023. Since then, much has been accomplished: more than half of the nave walls have been covered with iconography. Unlike many other church artists who, for the sake of convenience and productivity) create their images on canvas and then paste them on the church walls, Ivan and Roman work directly on the wall.
We invite you to view this film, which introduces us to the life of an iconographer, to his challenges and joys, to his everyday work and his spiritual focus.
